Media & Communications Specialist

ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE:
- Supervisor: Director of Youth Services and Director of Economic Development
- Max Hours: 25 per week
- Compensation: $28 – $35 per hour
Position Summary:
The Media & Communications Specialist supports the organization’s storytelling, branding, and public engagement efforts across all departments, including Youth Services, Housing, Economic Development, and the Flatbush Tenant Coalition. This role is responsible for creating compelling digital content, capturing program impact through photography and videography, and assisting with communications that elevate the organization’s mission and visibility.
Content Creation & Storytelling
- Capture high-quality photos and videos of programs, events, and community initiatives
- Edit and produce engaging multimedia content for social media, newsletters, and the website
- Develop creative content that highlights participant impact, success stories, and program outcomes
Social Media Management
- Assist in managing and scheduling content across social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Monitor engagement, respond to comments/messages as needed, and track performance metrics
- Ensure consistent voice, tone, and branding across all platforms
- In collaboration with the Director of Economic Development, they would write and edit newsletters, blog posts, program spotlights, and press materials.
- Conduct interviews with staff, participants, and stakeholders to develop stories
- Support internal and external communications with clear, engaging written content
Branding & Marketing
- Maintain and uphold the organization’s brand identity across all communications
- Collaborate on marketing campaigns to promote programs, events, and initiatives
- Assist in developing promotional materials, flyers, and digital campaigns
Cross-Departmental Support
- Work closely with Youth Services, Housing, and Economic Development teams to gather content and highlight key initiatives
- Translate program activities into compelling communications for diverse audiences
- Ensure all departments are represented consistently and equitably in communications
Website & Communications Coordination
- Collaborate with website designers and the communications team to update website content
- Assist with uploading blogs, event updates, and program information
- Ensure website content is current, accurate, and aligned with branding
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or in progress) in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Media, or related field preferred
- Experience in photography and videography (portfolio required)
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Familiarity with social media platforms and content scheduling tools
- Basic knowledge of graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)
- Experience with video editing software (e.g., Premiere Pro, CapCut, Final Cut Pro)
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
